The NDIGBO FOR TINUBU 2027 FORUM (NDI-ABAT) has issued a strong warning to the Federal Government over what it described as “disturbing developments” within Nigeria’s opposition coalition ahead of the 2027 general elections.

In a press release dated April 27, 2026, the group alleged that key opposition figures including Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, Seyi Makinde, and Rabiu Kwankwaso are engaged in strategic moves that could destabilize the country if not addressed.

According to the group, concerns stem from discussions at a recent opposition summit held in Ibadan, where references were allegedly made to “Operation Wetie,” a term historically associated with political violence during Nigeria’s First Republic. NDI-ABAT described the reference as “ominous” and warned it could signal a dangerous shift in political rhetoric ahead of the 2027 elections.

The forum expressed fears that invoking such historical language may heighten tensions and undermine democratic processes. It called on the administration of Bola Ahmed Tinubu to investigate the context and implications of the remarks, urging authorities to ensure that political competition remains peaceful and law-abiding.

NDI-ABAT also questioned the choice of Ibadan widely known for its connection to past political unrest as the venue for the summit, suggesting it may carry symbolic meaning. However, the opposition figures named in the statement have not publicly responded to the allegations at the time of filing this report.

Reaffirming its support for the current administration, the group emphasized the need to protect Nigeria’s democracy from threats of violence, intimidation, or unconstitutional arrangements such as an interim government.

Political analysts note that as the 2027 elections draw closer, rhetoric from both ruling and opposition camps is likely to intensify, underscoring the importance of responsible communication and adherence to democratic norms.
