BBC to Release ‘Surviving Biafra’ Documentary Nearly 60 Years After Nigerian Civil War
The BBC is set to release a new documentary titled Surviving Biafra, nearly six decades after the Nigerian Civil War ended.
The documentary, directed by Grammy-winning Nigerian filmmaker Meji Alabi, is scheduled for release on June 1 and is expected to revisit one of the most painful chapters in Nigeria’s history through firsthand accounts from people who experienced the conflict.
According to the BBC, the film features emotional testimonies from both soldiers and civilians who lived through the war, offering perspectives from different sides of the conflict that lasted from 1967 to 1970.
The Nigerian Civil War, also known as the Biafran War, began after the attempted secession of the southeastern region as the Republic of Biafra. The conflict resulted in massive humanitarian crises, displacement, starvation, and the deaths of millions of people, many of them civilians and children.
Surviving Biafra aims to document personal memories of survival, loss, resilience, and the long-lasting impact of the war on Nigerian society decades later.
Director Meji Alabi is widely known for his visually compelling storytelling and music video productions for global stars. His involvement in the documentary has already generated significant interest online, especially among Nigerians eager to see a modern retelling of the historic conflict.
