Arsenal Win Premier League Title After Man City Slip-Up Ends 22-Year Wait
Arsenal have officially been crowned Premier League champions for the first time in 22 years after Manchester City were held to a dramatic 1-1 draw by AFC Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium.
The result means City can no longer catch Arsenal at the top of the table, handing Mikel Arteta and his players the title with one game remaining in the season.
Arsenal had moved five points clear at the summit following Monday night’s hard-fought 1-0 victory over Burnley FC, thanks to a first-half strike from Kai Havertz.
That left City needing a victory away at Bournemouth to keep the title race alive heading into the final weekend. However, the reigning champions failed to deliver as Bournemouth produced a resilient display under departing manager Andoni Iraola.
Young forward Eli Junior Kroupi stunned City by opening the scoring in the 39th minute, putting Arsenal fans on edge as celebrations were temporarily delayed.
Despite heavy pressure from Pep Guardiola’s side in the second half, Bournemouth defended bravely before Erling Haaland scored a late equaliser in stoppage time. The goal, however, was not enough to save City’s title hopes.
Across North London, Arsenal supporters gathered around the Emirates Stadium erupted into celebration at the final whistle as the club ended more than two decades of Premier League heartbreak.
Arteta, who replaced Unai Emery in December 2019, paid tribute to the fans and players after securing the title.
“We made history again together. I cannot be happier and prouder for everybody involved in this football club,” Arteta said.
The triumph marks Arsenal’s first league title since the famous Invincibles season under legendary manager Arsène Wenger in 2003-04.
After several near misses and three consecutive second-place finishes, Arteta has finally guided Arsenal back to the summit of English football.
Arsenal’s remarkable campaign could still become historic, with the Gunners also preparing for the UEFA Champions League final against Paris Saint-Germain in Budapest next weekend.
Meanwhile, City’s title challenge collapsed during what is expected to be Pep Guardiola’s final season at the club following reports that the Spaniard will step down at the end of the campaign.
Despite winning the FA Cup and Carabao Cup this season, City’s hopes of another Premier League crown are now over.
