Porto Clinch Portuguese Title with Narrow Win Over Alverca

FC Porto were crowned champions of the Primeira Liga for the first time since 2022 after a hard-fought 1-0 victory over F.C. Alverca on Saturday.

The decisive moment came just before halftime when Jan Bednarek rose highest to power home a towering header from a corner in the 40th minute, sealing a crucial win that confirmed Porto’s return to the top of Portuguese football.

The result moved Porto nine points clear of closest challengers SL Benfica with two matches remaining, putting the title mathematically beyond reach.

Earlier in the day, Benfica had stumbled to a 2-2 draw against F.C. Famalicão, a result that ultimately handed Porto the advantage. Benfica had raced into a two-goal lead, but their momentum was halted after defender Nicolás Otamendi was sent off early in the second half, allowing Famalicão to mount a comeback and secure a vital point.

Porto’s triumph marks a dream debut season for head coach Francesco Farioli, who lifts the first major trophy of his managerial career. Under his guidance, Porto have combined defensive discipline with attacking efficiency to reclaim domestic dominance.

The title is Porto’s 31st league crown, strengthening their position as one of Portugal’s most successful clubs, second only to Benfica’s tally of 38 championships.

Speaking after the match, former Porto coach José Mourinho, now in charge of Benfica, acknowledged the result despite expressing frustration with officiating.

“This game is a good reflection of what has happened in this championship. I want to give my congratulations to FC Porto for being deserving champions,” Mourinho said.

With the title secured, Porto can now focus on finishing the season strongly as they celebrate a return to the summit of Portuguese football.
