ECOWAS Offers $65,000 to Startups: Eligibility, Deadline and How to Apply
West African startup founders have a new opportunity to compete for $65,000 in cash prizes as applications open for the 2026 ECOWAS Startup Awards, a regional competition designed to identify and support promising businesses driving innovation and economic development across the sub-region.
The second edition of the ECOWAS Startup Awards is targeting high-impact startups contributing to digital transformation, regional integration and sustainable value-chain development across West Africa.
The programme is being organised by the ECOWAS Commission’s Directorate of Private Sector and Industry and will be hosted in Abuja, Nigeria.
ECOWAS Startup Awards 2026: How Much Can Winners Get?
Three startups will emerge as the top winners of the 2026 competition.
The prize structure is:
- Overall winner — $30,000
- First runner-up — $20,000
- Second runner-up — $15,000
This brings the total cash prize to $65,000.
But the organisers say the benefits go beyond the prize money.
Selected startups are expected to receive regional exposure, investor introductions, mentorship and networking opportunities involving entrepreneurs, investors and policymakers.
Winners and selected participants will also have access to a six-month acceleration programme, as well as digital tools such as computers, accessories and software.
Which Startups Can Apply?
The 2026 ECOWAS Startup Awards is open to startups operating in six major technology-driven sectors:
- EdTech
- FinTech
- HealthTech
- AgriTech
- CleanTech
- TravelTech
The organisers expect 60 startups from ECOWAS member states to participate in the programme.
ECOWAS Startup Awards 2026 Eligibility
Founders interested in applying must meet several requirements.
Applicants must:
- Be citizens of an ECOWAS member state.
- Operate a registered and locally based startup.
- Have operated the startup for at least two years.
- Have a working product or service.
- Demonstrate market traction or scalability.
- Provide all required supporting documents.
This means the competition is aimed at operating businesses with evidence of development and market potential rather than just early-stage business ideas.
What Documents Do Founders Need?
Eligible founders are expected to prepare key business documents before submitting their applications.
These include:
- Business registration certificate
- Financial records or financial projections
- Business plan
- Pitch deck
- One-minute pitch video
Having these documents ready could help applicants avoid delays as the application deadline approaches.
When Is the ECOWAS Startup Awards 2026 Deadline?
Applications for the 2026 ECOWAS Startup Awards opened on August 3, 2026.
The deadline for submission is August 31, 2026.
Founders interested in participating therefore have until the end of August to complete their applications and submit the required documents.
When Will the ECOWAS Startup Awards Take Place?
The programme will feature both virtual and physical activities.
September 21–25, 2026: Virtual masterclasses and startup clinics.
September 28–30, 2026: Physical activities in Abuja, including the pitch competition, exhibitions and investor sessions.
Finalists will pitch their businesses before an independent regional jury comprising professionals from the investment, industry and policy sectors.
The winners will be selected based on the judges’ scoring and consensus.
How Will Startups Be Selected?
The selection process will take place in two stages.
Some participating startups will be nominated by ECOWAS member states, while other slots will be filled through applications submitted by eligible members of the public.
Successful finalists will proceed to the regional pitch competition in Abuja, where they will present their businesses to the independent jury.
The organisers say the programme will also feature startup clinics, masterclasses, exhibitions, investor deal rooms and policy dialogues, giving founders opportunities to connect with potential investors and key decision-makers.
Why Nigerian Startup Founders Should Pay Attention
For Nigerian entrepreneurs, the ECOWAS Startup Awards could provide an opportunity to take a locally developed business to a wider West African market.
Beyond the possibility of winning up to $30,000, participation could give selected founders access to investors, mentors, policymakers and other entrepreneurs from across the region.
With Nigeria’s large technology and startup ecosystem, the competition could also provide Nigerian founders with an opportunity to showcase businesses capable of scaling beyond the domestic market.
Nigerian founders and eligible entrepreneurs across ECOWAS are encouraged to prepare their documents and submit their applications before the August 31 deadline.
