Businesses in Nigeria using the WhatsApp Business Platform for large-scale customer communication could begin paying about ₦14 for certain messages from October 1, 2026, under an upcoming pricing change.

Meta, the parent company of WhatsApp, is set to introduce charges for certain service and utility messages sent through the WhatsApp Business Platform, formerly known as the WhatsApp Business API.

The change is expected to affect companies that use the platform to manage high volumes of customer communication, including banks, fintech companies, telecommunications operators, retailers, logistics firms and e-commerce platforms.

However, ordinary WhatsApp users will not be affected by the new pricing policy, while most small businesses using the standard WhatsApp Business mobile application will also continue using the app without these API-based per-message charges.

Businesses to pay for previously free messages

Under the new policy, certain business replies and utility messages sent during WhatsApp’s 24-hour customer service window will become chargeable from October 1.

Service messages are generally non-template responses sent by a business after a customer initiates a conversation, while utility messages include transactional communications such as payment confirmations, account updates, order confirmations and delivery notifications.

The 24-hour customer service window will remain available, but messages that previously enjoyed free treatment within the window are expected to become billable under the new pricing arrangement.

Nigerian businesses may pay about ₦14 per message

Reports on the current pricing references indicate that a chargeable utility or service-type message sent to a Nigerian number could cost around $0.0101 per message, estimated at approximately ₦14, depending on the applicable exchange rate and Meta’s final rate card.

The ₦14 figure should therefore be treated as an estimate rather than a fixed naira price, as businesses are billed based on Meta’s pricing structure and the final cost in naira can vary with exchange rates and applicable rates.

Marketing messages are expected to cost significantly more, with reports putting the estimated rate at around $0.062 per message, or approximately ₦84, based on the exchange rate used in those calculations.

The Meta charge may also not represent the total cost paid by every business, as companies using third-party Business Solution Providers could face additional platform or provider fees.

Payment method deadline set for September 30

Businesses and Solution Providers have also been advised to ensure they have a valid payment method linked to their accounts before the new charges take effect.

According to the reported pricing update, businesses or directly integrated companies without a payment method on file by September 30, 2026, could face disruption to the delivery of affected service messages when charging begins on October 1.

What the new charges mean for banks, fintechs and retailers

The development could increase communication costs for Nigerian companies that rely heavily on WhatsApp for automated customer interactions.

Banks and fintech companies, for instance, use messaging platforms to send transaction-related updates and customer support responses, while e-commerce companies and retailers use them for order confirmations, delivery updates and customer engagement.

For high-volume users, even a charge of about ₦14 per message could become significant.

A company sending 500,000 chargeable messages, for example, could face an estimated Meta messaging bill of about ₦7 million at ₦14 per message, before additional charges from third-party service providers and possible exchange-rate variations.

The policy is part of Meta’s broader move towards per-message pricing for commercial communication on the WhatsApp Business Platform. The biggest impact is likely to be felt by companies that handle customer support and transactional messaging at a large scale.
