VIDEO: VeryDarkMan Knocks Youth Minister Over Plan to Replace NYSC Khaki with Adire
Social media activist and influencer VeryDarkMan has criticised Ayodele Olawande over the Federal Government’s proposed replacement of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) khaki uniform with Adire.
Reacting in a social media post, VeryDarkMan argued that the minister had recorded no significant achievements in youth development since assuming office and questioned the decision to prioritise a change of the NYSC uniform.
“This is what happens when you put morons like Ayodele Olawande in the position of Minister of Youth Development. Since he became minister, there has been no tangible achievement in respect to youth development in Nigeria. What Adire to replace the NYSC khaki?” he said.
The activist also argued that Adire is widely associated with Yoruba cultural attire and questioned why it should become the official uniform of a national scheme that represents youths from Nigeria’s diverse ethnic backgrounds.
According to him, Nigeria is home to more than 200 ethnic groups, including the Igbo, Hausa, Ijaw, Nupe, Efik and Edo, and adopting Adire as the NYSC uniform could raise concerns about ethnic representation.
His comments come after Olawande announced that the Federal Government plans to replace the traditional khaki uniform with locally produced Adire as part of broader reforms aimed at promoting Nigeria’s textile industry and supporting local manufacturing.
The minister explained that the initiative is intended to keep government spending within the local economy by encouraging the use of fabrics produced by Nigerian textile manufacturers. He also stated that the proposal forms part of wider reforms approved for the NYSC scheme.
The proposed uniform change has generated mixed reactions on social media, with some Nigerians welcoming efforts to promote indigenous industries, while others have questioned whether the move should be a priority amid broader challenges facing young people and the NYSC programme.
