FCT Police Rescue Two Abandoned Newborns in Kurudu, Gwagwalada

The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has rescued two newborn babies abandoned in separate incidents in Kurudu and Gwagwalada areas of Abuja.

The babies, a boy and a girl, were rescued on Wednesday, September 2, after residents in the two communities heard their cries and alerted the police.

The Command’s Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, disclosed the incidents in a statement issued on Friday, saying investigations were ongoing to establish the circumstances surrounding the abandonment and identify the babies’ mothers or other relatives.

Baby boy found in carton in Kurudu

According to the police, the first incident occurred around 5:30 p.m. on September 2 near Obodo Street, Kurudu.

A resident identified as Mr Innocent reportedly heard the cry of a baby and, upon checking the area, discovered a newborn boy carefully wrapped in cloth and abandoned inside a carton box.

Innocent reported the discovery at the Kurudu Police Station at about 5:45 p.m.

Police officers from the Kurudu Division, accompanied by personnel from the Juveniles and Women Care (JWC) Department, were subsequently deployed to the location and rescued the baby.

The child was taken to a nearby hospital for medical assessment and was reported to be in stable condition.

After the necessary documentation, the baby was handed over to the Social Welfare Department for further care while police continued their investigation.

Baby girl abandoned in Gwagwalada

A second incident occurred later the same night in Gwagwalada.

Police said a resident, Mr Ibrahim, heard a baby crying outside his gate at about 9:40 p.m.

Upon inspection, Ibrahim discovered a baby girl who appeared to have been abandoned at the premises. He and other concerned members of the community rescued the child and reported the matter at the Gwagwalada Police Station at about 10:15 p.m.

Personnel from the JWC Department subsequently took the baby girl to the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital for medical examination and care.

The child remained under medical care pending her handover to the Social Welfare Department.

Police seek information on babies’ families

The FCT Police Command commended Innocent, Ibrahim and other residents who responded promptly to the babies’ cries and alerted the authorities.

Adeh appealed to members of the public who may have information capable of helping investigators identify the babies’ mothers or other family members to come forward.

The Command said efforts were being intensified to determine the circumstances surrounding the abandonment of both babies.

The incidents have once again drawn attention to the vulnerability of newborn children and the importance of prompt community intervention when suspected cases of child abandonment are discovered.
