Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has called on Nigerians at home and abroad to take collective responsibility for rebuilding the country, condemning bad leadership, corruption and lack of accountability.

Obi made the call in a post on X on Thursday, October 22, following engagements with British government officials and members of the Nigerian diaspora during his visit to the United Kingdom.

In the post titled “Rebuilding Nigeria,” the former Anambra State governor said the discussions focused on the need to free Nigeria from persistent leadership failures and corruption that continue to undermine national development.

Obi disclosed that he arrived in London at 7 a.m. on Wednesday, October 21, from Basel, Switzerland, before embarking on several engagements, including meetings with stakeholders.

He said he concluded the day’s activities with a meeting organised by the Chief of the Coalition for the Protection of Democracy (COPDEM) and the Director of Diaspora Affairs of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), alongside other stakeholders in London.

According to him, the meetings with British government officials and Nigerians living abroad centred on their shared responsibility to rebuild the country and address challenges that have hindered its development.

“These challenges have deprived millions of Nigerians of access to basic necessities, including quality healthcare, education, and decent employment,” Obi wrote.

Obi Advocates Equal Opportunities for Nigerians

The former presidential candidate stressed that Nigerians deserve a country where every citizen has access to opportunities, irrespective of their background or personal connections.

He argued that hard work should be rewarded and that access to essential services and opportunities should not be restricted to a privileged section of society.

Obi further called for a Nigeria where citizens can achieve success through their abilities and efforts rather than relying on influential connections.

“We must build a Nigeria where the child of nobody can become somebody without knowing anybody,” he said.

He added that the country should work for everyone rather than serving the interests of a privileged few.

2027 Elections and the Demand for Better Leadership

Obi’s message comes as political activities and discussions about Nigeria’s leadership intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections.

His call for accountability, improved public services and equal opportunities places governance and national development at the centre of the debate about the country’s future.

The former Labour Party presidential candidate has continued to advocate a Nigeria where citizens can access quality healthcare, education and decent employment without undue hardship.

His latest remarks also underscore the potential role of Nigerians in the diaspora in supporting efforts to improve governance and national development.

Obi ended his message with his familiar political slogan, declaring: “A New Nigeria is POssible.”

The post reinforces his appeal for collective action to address the country’s challenges and build a nation where opportunities are accessible to all Nigerians.
