Abuja Area Council Election Results 2026: APC Wins 5 Councils, PDP Takes Gwagwalada
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially released the results of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Area Council elections held on Saturday, with the All Progressives Congress (APC) winning five out of the six councils.
Results from polling units across the six area councils were uploaded to the INEC Result Viewing Portal (IReV) hours after the elections were conducted.
The elections recorded notably low voter turnout in several polling units, particularly in parts of Abuja city.

This marks the first election conducted under the newly amended Electoral Act signed into law by President Bola Tinubu on February 18. It is also the second election supervised by the new INEC Chairman, Joash Amupitan, who assumed office on October 23, 2025. His first election in office was the November 2025 Anambra State governorship poll.
Gwagwalada Area Council — PDP Wins
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Mohammed Kasim, emerged winner of the Gwagwalada Area Council chairmanship election.
INEC Returning Officer Philip Akpen announced the result on Sunday, February 22, stating that Kasim secured 22,165 votes to defeat Yahaya Shehu of the APC, who polled 17,788 votes.
Akpen described the election as peaceful and smoothly conducted.

Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) — APC Wins
INEC declared Christopher Maikalangu of the APC as the duly elected Chairman of the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC).
The collation officer for AMAC, Andrew Abue, announced the results.
Key Results:
- APC: 40,295 votes
- ADC: 12,109 votes
- PDP: 3,398 votes
- SDP: 2,185 votes
- NNPP: 1,694 votes
- APGA: 1,111 votes
- Other parties recorded lower figures.
Bwari Area Council — APC Wins
Joshua Ishaku of the APC won the Bwari Area Council chairmanship election with 18,466 votes.
The Returning Officer, Professor Mohammed Nurudeen, announced the result on Sunday in Bwari.

- ZLP: 3,515
Kwali Area Council — APC Wins
Daniel Nuhu of the APC won the Kwali Area Council election with 16,656 votes, defeating PDP candidate Haruna Pai, who secured 8,467 votes.
Abaji Area Council — APC Wins
Umar Abdullahi of the APC was declared winner of the Abaji Area Council chairmanship election.

- PDP: 4,547
- NNPP: 53

Kuje Area Council — APC Wins
Danjuma Samuel of the APC emerged winner of the Kuje Area Council chairmanship election.
The Returning Officer, Professor Nkiruka Odoh, announced the results after collation at the INEC office in Kuje.
Samuel polled 17,269 votes, defeating Zakwoyi Danlami of the PDP, who secured 15,824 votes.
APGA recorded 4,305 votes in the contest.
Overall Outcome
Out of the six area councils in the FCT:
- APC won five councils — AMAC, Bwari, Kwali, Abaji, and Kuje.
- PDP won one council — Gwagwalada.
The elections were generally described as peaceful but were marked by low voter participation across several parts of the capital territory.
