FC Barcelona moved to the brink of the La Liga title after a hard-fought 2-1 victory over CA Osasuna on Saturday night, extending their commanding lead at the top of the table.

In a tense encounter, Barcelona needed late heroics to secure all three points. Veteran striker Robert Lewandowski broke the deadlock late on, finishing from a precise assist by Marcus Rashford, who continues to impress during his loan spell from Manchester United.

Moments later, Ferran Torres added a crucial second goal to seal the win, easing nerves inside the stadium as Osasuna pushed for a comeback.

FIRS

Despite Barcelona’s attacking quality, it was goalkeeper Joan García who emerged as the standout performer, earning Man of the Match honors with a series of vital saves that preserved the lead under intense pressure.

The victory puts Barcelona 14 points clear at the summit of La Liga with just seven matches remaining. The Catalan giants are now within touching distance of the title and could be crowned champions as early as Sunday, depending on the result of Real Madrid against RCD Espanyol.

Should Madrid avoid defeat, Barcelona will have another opportunity to seal the title in next weekend’s decisive El Clásico clash.

Porto Crowned Champions After Narrow Win Over Alverca

FC Porto were crowned champions of the Primeira Liga for the first time since 2022 after a hard-fought 1-0 victory over F.C. Alverca on Saturday.

The decisive moment came just before halftime when Jan Bednarek rose highest to power home a towering header from a corner in the 40th minute, sealing a crucial win that confirmed Porto’s return to the top of Portuguese football.

The result moved Porto nine points clear of closest challengers SL Benfica with two matches remaining, putting the title mathematically beyond reach.

FIRS

Earlier in the day, Benfica had stumbled to a 2-2 draw against F.C. Famalicão, a result that ultimately handed Porto the advantage. Benfica had raced into a two-goal lead, but their momentum was halted after defender Nicolás Otamendi was sent off early in the second half, allowing Famalicão to mount a comeback and secure a vital point.

Porto’s triumph marks a dream debut season for head coach Francesco Farioli, who lifts the first major trophy of his managerial career. Under his guidance, Porto have combined defensive discipline with attacking efficiency to reclaim domestic dominance.

The title is Porto’s 31st league crown, strengthening their position as one of Portugal’s most successful clubs, second only to Benfica’s tally of 38 championships.

Speaking after the match, former Porto coach José Mourinho, now in charge of Benfica, acknowledged the result despite expressing frustration with officiating.

“This game is a good reflection of what has happened in this championship. I want to give my congratulations to FC Porto for being deserving champions,” Mourinho said.

With the title secured, Porto can now focus on finishing the season strongly as they celebrate a return to the summit of Portuguese football.

The Philadelphia 76ers completed a stunning turnaround to eliminate the Boston Celtics with a 109-100 victory in Game 7 at TD Garden, overcoming a 3-1 series deficit in dramatic fashion.

It marks Philadelphia’s first playoff series win over Boston since 1982, ending decades of postseason frustration against their Eastern Conference rivals.

Reigning MVP Joel Embiid delivered a dominant all-around performance, finishing with 34 points, 12 rebounds, and six assists. He was ably supported by Tyrese Maxey, who produced a sensational display with 30 points, 11 rebounds, and seven assists.

FIRS

The Celtics were dealt a major blow before tip-off as superstar Jayson Tatum was ruled out late with a knee injury, disrupting Boston’s game plan. Despite the setback, Jaylen Brown stepped up with 33 points, but it was not enough to halt Philadelphia’s momentum.

Philadelphia’s victory caps a remarkable series turnaround after suffering two heavy defeats by 32 points earlier in the matchup. Their resilience and defensive intensity proved decisive in the closing stages, as they pulled away in the fourth quarter to silence the home crowd.

The win sends the seventh-seeded 76ers into the next round, where they will face the New York Knicks in what promises to be another high-stakes playoff clash.

For Boston, the defeat marks an early postseason exit their first before the later rounds since 2022 raising questions about their championship aspirations despite entering the playoffs as the No. 2 seed.

The Africa Cup of Nations 2027 will be held from June 19 to July 17, 2027, as East Africa prepares to host the prestigious tournament for the first time in more than 50 years.

The announcement was made by the Confederation of African Football following approval from the FIFA Council at a meeting in Vancouver, Canada.

The 2027 edition will be jointly hosted by Uganda, Kenya, and Tanzania, making it the first AFCON tournament to be staged across three countries. CAF has yet to decide which of the host nations will stage the opening match and the final.

CAF President Patrice Motsepe reiterated confidence in the host nations, dismissing earlier concerns about delays due to infrastructure readiness.

“We have worked hard to ensure that the AFCON is held in East Africa, and our commitment remains unwavering. I am confident that we will organise a very successful AFCON in these three countries,” Motsepe said.

The tournament also marks a return of Africa’s biggest football competition to the region for the first time since the 1976 Africa Cup of Nations hosted in Ethiopia.

With preparations ongoing, the 2027 AFCON is expected to boost football development and economic activities across East Africa while delivering a unique multi-country hosting experience.
