Ohanaeze Blasts Peter Obi Over “Nigerian, Not Igbo” Remark Ahead of 2027

The apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has intensified debate over the 2027 presidential race following remarks attributed to Peter Obi about his political identity and strategy.

In a statement issued on Sunday, the group expressed concern over what it described as Obi’s alleged attempt to downplay his Igbo identity in pursuit of broader national appeal.

The reaction comes amid the circulation of a statement credited to Obi in which he reportedly said he is “not contesting because I am an Igbo man… but because I am a Nigerian” and should be judged on competence rather than ethnicity.

Ohanaeze’s Position

Ohanaeze argued that such a stance, while politically strategic, could be interpreted by stakeholders in the Southeast as a distancing from core identity.

Describing the development as troubling, the group said any perceived denial or downplaying of ethnic roots for electoral advantage raises concerns about trust, representation, and long-term commitment to regional interests.

“The preservation of identity and integrity remains central to leadership expectations,” the statement noted.

Tinubu Emerges in Calculations

In a significant political signal, Ohanaeze suggested it may reconsider its alignment ahead of 2027, pointing to Bola Ahmed Tinubu as a possible consensus option for Ndigbo.

The group linked this position to ongoing infrastructure priorities in the Southeast, including road rehabilitation, rail expansion, and major port projects aimed at boosting regional economic growth.

Call for Strategic Realignment

Ohanaeze also urged Obi and Rotimi Amaechi to reconsider their presidential ambitions, suggesting a longer-term political strategy aligned with zoning expectations.

Political observers note that Obi’s “Nigerian over ethnic identity” framing is consistent with his long-standing messaging of national unity and competence based leadership, rather than identity politics. They warn that differing interpretations of such remarks especially in Nigeria’s highly sensitive ethnic political landscape could fuel new tensions as the 2027 elections approach.

As of press time, Obi had not issued any fresh response specifically addressing Ohanaeze’s claims.

The Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, the apex Igbo socio-cultural organization, is issuing this press release to shed light on the troubling developments surrounding the 2027 presidential race, specifically regarding the actions of the former Anambra State governor, Mr. Peter Obi.

Credible intelligence has come to our attention indicating that Mr. Peter Obi, the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, has allegedly been asked to deny his Igbo identity as a condition to secure northern votes in the upcoming 2027 elections. It is a matter of great concern that Mr. Obi appears to have strategically downplayed his rich Igbo cultural heritage in an attempt to please a few powerful northern traditional rulers and political kingmakers.

This action is seen by Ndigbo as a serious political miscalculation and a display of a slavish mindset. Any individual who can so readily deny their own identity on the altar of political desperation cannot be trusted. Moreover, such a person is highly unlikely to honor an agreement for a single – term presidency in 2027 In the political arena, integrity and loyalty to one’s roots are fundamental qualities that a leader should possess. Mr. Obi’s actions undermine these principles and cast doubt on his suitability for the highest office in the land.In light of these developments, the Ohanaeze Ndigbo believes that this situation has opened a new avenue.

We are now fully considering supporting President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as a possible Igbo consensus candidate in the absence of any other serious Igbo presidential contender. There are compelling reasons for this consideration.

Firstly, 2027 is the turn of the Southern region of Nigeria to produce the president. Secondly, the Ndigbo have specific infrastructural and economic needs that they hope to see fulfilled.Ndigbo are keenly interested in the completion of all ongoing federal road projects in the Southeast.

President Tinubu’s administration, through the Minister of Works, Senator Dave Umahi, has the potential to ensure that these projects are completed from 2026 to 2031.The construction of new federal roads, the creation of a sixth state for the Southeast, the implementation of the approved 2500km standard gauge railway line from Port Harcourt to Maiduguri, the dredging of the Calabar Seaport, and the establishment of a deep seaport at Azummiri Blue River in Ukwa East Local Government Area of Abia State, which is only 31 nautical miles from the Atlantic Ocean, are all crucial projects.

These initiatives are far more important to Ndigbo than Mr. Obi’s presidential ambitions. They are essential for reviving the economy of the old Eastern region, which was once regarded as the fastest – growing economy in the world during the era of the late Premier of the old Eastern region, Dr. Michael Okpara in the 1960s.In conclusion, the Ohanaeze Ndigbo firmly advises both Mr. Peter Obi and Mr. Chibuike Amaechi to withdraw from the 2027 presidential race.

They should wait until 2035 when it will rightfully be the turn of Ndigbo to produce the President of Nigeria. It is time for a more strategic and far – sighted approach to political leadership in the country, one that prioritizes the long – term interests of Ndigbo and the nation as a whole.
