At least five persons have been confirmed dead, while 10 others were rescued alive after a three-storey building under construction collapsed in the Durumi 3 area near Gudu Market in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, on Saturday morning, May 16.

Emergency responders are still carrying out rescue operations at the construction site located around Gaduwa Estate in the Gudu District, amid fears that more victims may still be trapped beneath the rubble.

Officials of the Federal Fire Service, health workers, security agencies, and local volunteers were seen working tirelessly at the scene to evacuate victims as anxious residents gathered around the area.

Speaking during the rescue operation, the Mandate Secretary of the Health Services and Environment Secretariat of the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), Dr. Adedolapo Fasawe, disclosed that the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, had directed that all injured victims receive free medical treatment.

Authorities are yet to determine the exact cause of the collapse, while investigations into the incident are expected to commence after rescue efforts are concluded.

The latest incident has again raised concerns over building safety standards and compliance with construction regulations within the nation’s capital.
