Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide has urged Nigerians, particularly motorists, transport operators and residents who depend on the Benin–Agbor–Asaba Expressway, to remain calm and patient as the Federal Government moves to address the deteriorating condition of the major highway.

The apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his intervention and directive to urgently address the condition of the expressway, describing the route as a critical national transportation corridor connecting the South-South, Southeast and other parts of Nigeria.

In a statement signed by the Deputy President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro, and the Acting Secretary General, Prof. Chibuikeya Achokawa, the organisation said the road is important to the movement of people, agricultural produce, industrial goods and commercial activities across the country.

Ohanaeze acknowledged the difficulties faced by motorists and transport operators due to prolonged delays, traffic congestion, vehicle damage and other challenges associated with the poor state of the highway.

The group also commended the Minister of Works, Senator Dave Umahi, for his prompt response and inspection of the Benin–Asaba corridor on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, following President Tinubu’s directive.

According to Ohanaeze, Umahi’s personal assessment of the road demonstrates the seriousness and urgency attached to resolving the problems confronting road users.

The organisation described the minister as a disciplined and performance-driven administrator who places accountability, quality and timely delivery at the centre of infrastructure development.

However, Ohanaeze called on the Ministry of Works to comprehensively review the capacity, competence and performance of contractors working under the existing concession arrangements.

The group said the presence of construction equipment along the highway was encouraging but stressed that the pace of work must correspond with the urgency and national importance of the project.

“Any contractor found incapable of delivering quality work within the required timeframe must be made to face appropriate contractual consequences,” the organisation said.

Ohanaeze maintained that a major national infrastructure project such as the Benin–Agbor–Asaba Expressway should not be subjected to unnecessary delays, inefficiency or inadequate performance.

The organisation expressed confidence that Umahi’s approach to project supervision and contractor accountability would help ensure that President Tinubu’s directive is fully implemented.

It subsequently appealed to Nigerians and other road users to exercise patience and maintain confidence in the ongoing intervention.

“With the combined determination of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Senator Dave Umahi, the Benin–Agbor–Asaba Expressway will receive the urgent attention required for improved safety, efficiency and durability,” Ohanaeze said.

The organisation reaffirmed its commitment to supporting responsible governance, national development and policies aimed at improving the welfare and economic prosperity of Nigerians.
