Desmond Elliot has lost his bid to secure the All Progressives Congress (APC) ticket for re-election into the Lagos State House of Assembly after suffering a heavy defeat in the party’s primary election for Surulere Constituency I.

The primary election, held on Wednesday, saw Barakat Odunuga-Bakare, reportedly backed by Femi Gbajabiamila, emerge victorious in the contest.

According to the results announced after voting across the constituency wards, Odunuga-Bakare polled 11,385 votes to defeat Elliot, who secured 270 votes.

The outcome comes amid controversy surrounding the APC primary in the constituency, following Elliot’s earlier withdrawal from the race over alleged intimidation and exclusion of his supporters from the voting venue.

The actor-turned-politician had accused some party officials of preventing his supporters from gaining access to the primary ground at the Paddington Mini Stadium along Western Avenue in Lagos.

“And of course, in all zones, they’ve been intimidating and stopping us,” Elliot had said in a video shared online before announcing his withdrawal from the contest.

He also claimed that repeated appeals to electoral officials to allow his supporters into the venue were ignored.

Despite the controversy, the primary election proceeded, with Odunuga-Bakare eventually emerging as the APC candidate for the Surulere I seat ahead of the next legislative election.

Elliot, who has represented the constituency in the Lagos Assembly for multiple terms, is one of the most recognizable figures in Lagos politics due to his background in the Nigerian film industry.
