How Igwe De MC Built a 20-Year Entertainment Career From Medicine to International Comedy Stages
While many entertainers struggle to remain relevant for a few years, Nigerian comedian and master of ceremonies, Henry Okwudilichukwu Ugwoke, popularly known as Igwe De MC, has continued to grow stronger in the entertainment industry after two decades on stage.
As he prepares for his landmark comedy show, “Jokes Apart” in Southampton, United Kingdom, the entertainer’s inspiring journey from the medical field to international entertainment stages is attracting renewed attention from fans and industry stakeholders.
Born in Ede-Oballa, Nsukka Local Government Area of Enugu State, Igwe De MC discovered his passion for entertainment at an early age. Despite pursuing a professional degree in Medical Radiography and Radiological Sciences at the University of Nigeria, he remained deeply connected to comedy, stage performance, and public speaking.
His journey into entertainment officially began in 2005, when he started anchoring events and performing as a comedian. What started as passion-driven performances gradually evolved into a respected career that has now spanned 20 years.
One of the major turning points in his career came during his involvement with the Joyful Family Theatre Group in Enugu, where he served two terms as president. The experience helped him sharpen his stagecraft, leadership abilities, and audience engagement skills.
Over the years, Igwe De MC became widely known for his energetic hosting style, originality, and ability to connect with audiences across different cultural backgrounds.
Beyond entertainment, he also emerged as a youth leader within the comedy industry. His emergence as President of the Association of Enugu State Comedians and MCs (ASSESCOM) further positioned him as one of the notable voices promoting unity and growth among entertainers in southeastern Nigeria.
His influence also attracted partnerships with brands such as Body Up Energy Drink, Chupez Nigeria Ltd, and Pik “A” Ride Transport Company, where he served as brand ambassador.
Industry observers say one of the biggest strengths of Igwe De MC is his versatility. Unlike many comedians who focus strictly on stand-up comedy, he successfully combined event hosting, live entertainment, comedy performance, stage coordination, and audience management into one unique brand.
After relocating to the United Kingdom, the entertainer expanded his reach beyond Nigeria, performing at multicultural events and African entertainment gatherings across Europe.
His upcoming show, “Jokes Apart,” scheduled for July 25 in Southampton, is expected to be one of the biggest African comedy gatherings in the city this summer.
The event will feature top entertainers including Seyilaw, Deacon Famous, Franchez, Twocantok, Sir One on One, Warri Bros, ND Funny, and several DJs and performers from the Nigerian entertainment scene.
For many fans, the event is more than a comedy show it is a celebration of consistency, resilience, and the power of pursuing passion despite professional limitations.
As he marks 20 years in entertainment, Igwe De MC continues to inspire young creatives who are balancing career ambitions with artistic dreams.
With growing recognition across the United Kingdom and Europe, many believe the entertainer is entering a new phase of global relevance in African comedy and live entertainment.
