Arbeloa Replaces Alonso as Real Madrid Head Coach
Former Real Madrid defender Álvaro Arbeloa has been appointed as the club’s new head coach following the departure of Xabi Alonso, Los Blancos confirmed on Monday.
In an official statement, Real Madrid announced that Alonso had left the club by mutual agreement, a decision taken a day after the club’s 3–2 defeat to Barcelona in the Spanish Super Cup final played in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
Shortly afterwards, the club confirmed that Arbeloa, who had been managing Real Madrid Castilla, would step up to take charge of the first team. The club did not disclose the duration of the 42-year-old’s contract.
“Álvaro Arbeloa has been the coach of Castilla since June 2025 and has developed his entire coaching career in Real Madrid’s academy since 2020,” the club said in a statement.
First Test for Arbeloa
Arbeloa’s first match as Real Madrid head coach will be a Copa del Rey round-of-16 clash against second-tier Albacete on Wednesday.
The former Spain international replaces Alonso just eight months into the Basque coach’s tenure, which ended following a run of mixed results and the Super Cup loss to Barcelona.
A Familiar Face at the Bernabéu
Arbeloa is a well-known figure at the Santiago Bernabéu, having made 238 appearances for Real Madrid between 2009 and 2016. During his playing career with the club, he won two UEFA Champions League titles, one La Liga crown, and several other trophies.
At international level, Arbeloa was part of Spain’s golden generation, winning the 2010 FIFA World Cup and European Championships in 2008 and 2012, often playing alongside Alonso for both club and country.
Alonso’s Difficult Spell
Alonso joined Real Madrid in June, replacing veteran coach Carlo Ancelotti, who left to take charge of the Brazil national team. Despite early optimism, Madrid struggled for consistency under the former midfielder.
Los Blancos currently sit second in La Liga, four points behind Barcelona, and were also beaten convincingly 4–0 by Paris Saint-Germain in the Club World Cup semi-finals in July.
Although a run of five consecutive league wins towards the end of 2025 temporarily eased pressure on Alonso, reports suggested his position remained under scrutiny amid injuries and alleged dressing-room tensions.
Despite signing a three-year contract until June 2028 after leaving Bayer Leverkusen, the Super Cup defeat to Barcelona proved decisive, with Madrid president Florentino Pérez ultimately opting for a change in direction.
Arbeloa now faces the challenge of restoring stability and momentum as Real Madrid continue their pursuit of domestic and European success.
