The first-leg matches of the UEFA Champions League Round of 16 on Tuesday delivered drama, goals, and dominant performances across Europe, with 17 goals scored in four games.

Atlético Madrid 5–2 Tottenham Hotspur

Atlético Madrid delivered a ruthless performance to put one foot in the quarterfinals with a commanding 5–2 victory over Tottenham Hotspur.

It was a nightmare start for Spurs goalkeeper Antonín Kinský, who was making his first Champions League start. The hosts stormed into a 3–0 lead inside the opening 15 minutes, forcing Tottenham manager Igor Tudor to substitute Kinský for Guglielmo Vicario.

According to Opta statistics, Atlético’s three goals in 14 minutes and 59 seconds marked the earliest a team has gone three goals ahead in a Champions League knockout-stage match.

The change in goal did little to stop the onslaught as Atlético added a fourth goal shortly after the substitution and a fifth early in the second half, leaving Tottenham facing a daunting task ahead of the second leg.

Atalanta 1–6 Bayern Munich

Bayern Munich produced one of the standout performances of the night with a stunning 6–1 away victory over Atalanta BC in Italy.

Early goals from Josip Stanišić, Michael Olise and Serge Gnabry inside the opening 25 minutes set the tone as the Bundesliga giants took full control of the tie ahead of next week’s return leg at the Allianz Arena.

Newcastle United 1–1 Barcelona

At St. James’ Park, Newcastle United looked set for a memorable win over FC Barcelona.

Harvey Barnes appeared to have sealed the victory when he scored in the 86th minute. However, late drama unfolded when Malick Thiaw fouled Dani Olmo in stoppage time.

Teenage sensation Lamine Yamal stepped up in the 95th minute, calmly converting the penalty and sending Aaron Ramsdale the wrong way to rescue a 1–1 draw for Barcelona.

Galatasaray 1–0 Liverpool

Galatasaray S.K. claimed a crucial first-leg advantage with a 1–0 victory over Liverpool F.C..

The decisive moment came in the 7th minute, when Mario Lemina headed home from a corner delivered by Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen.
