Lamine Yamal Scores Winner as Barcelona Beat Athletic Club to Extend La Liga Lead
FC Barcelona restored their four-point lead at the top of La Liga after teenage star Lamine Yamal scored the decisive goal in a hard-fought victory over Athletic Club.
The Spain international produced a moment of brilliance in the 68th minute, curling a superb effort past goalkeeper Unai Simón after collecting a pass from Pedri inside the penalty area at the iconic San Mamés Stadium.
Yamal’s strike proved enough to secure all three points for Barcelona and maintain their advantage at the summit of the Spanish top flight.
The goal was the 18-year-old winger’s 19th of the season, continuing a remarkable run of form. Yamal had grabbed headlines last weekend after scoring the first hat-trick of his professional career in Barcelona’s victory over Villarreal CF.
Barcelona’s latest win ensures that manager Hansi Flick’s side remain four points clear at the top of La Liga, despite Real Madrid securing a late 2–1 win over Celta Vigo on Friday night.
The Catalan giants will now turn their attention to European competition as they prepare to host Newcastle United in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League Round of 16 clash on Tuesday, March 10.
Athletic Club, meanwhile, will look to bounce back when they return to La Liga action against Girona FC on March 14.
