WORO MASSACRE: Emir’s Wives, Children, Chief Imam, Teachers, Students Slaughtered as Terrorists Overrun Kwara Town
Kaiama, Kwara State, Nigeria — At least dozens to more than 160 people have been killed in a brutal assault by heavily armed gunmen on the Woro and Nuku communities in Kaiama Local Government Area of Kwara State, heightening fears over expanding violence beyond Nigeria’s Northeast and Northwest regions.
The attacks began late Tuesday (Feb 3) when a large group of gunmen stormed the rural villages, firing indiscriminately, rounding up residents, and executing many of them. Homes, shops, and even the palace of the Emir of Woro, Alhaji Saliu Bio Umar, were set ablaze.
Death Toll Varies as Search Continues
- A senior lawmaker in the Kwara State House of Assembly confirmed that scores of villagers were killed in the onslaught.
- The International Red Cross and local officials reported that the death toll could be at least 162, with bodies still being recovered from remote parts of the communities.
- The Emir of Kaiama also confirmed that at least 102 victims were killed, with some bodies given Islamic mass burial rites.
Authorities have not yet confirmed a final toll, but residents and credible sources warn that the figure could rise further as security forces expand search operations.
Targeted Civilians, Traditional and Religious Leaders
According to community sources, among the dead are:
- Traditional leaders and relatives of royalty
- Civilians who had just returned from school
- Local religious figures such as the Chief Imam
- Teachers and students from nearby schools
Although some local reports mentioned the deaths of wives and children of the Emir of Woro, these specific identities remain unverified by major media outlets at the time of publication.
The Emir himself remains missing, with fears that he may have been killed or abducted after his official vehicle was seized by the attackers.
Possible Motive: Extremist and Bandit Elements
Preliminary accounts from residents and lawmakers indicate that the attackers may have been armed extremists or bandits operating in the border regions with Niger Republic, possibly linked to jihadist and outlaw groups that have expanded their reach into north-central Nigeria.
According to one Reuters report, residents said the gunmen had previously visited the communities and preached extremist ideology, urging locals to renounce allegiance to the Nigerian constitution in favour of Sharia law. When those appeals were rejected, the assailants opened fire.
Security analysts note that groups like the Lakurawa — an armed faction with known links to Islamic State affiliates — have been increasingly active in parts of Nigeria’s North West and are suspected in similar attacks, though no group has formally claimed responsibility for this assault.
Security Response and Official Condemnation
Following the attack:
- Police and military forces were mobilised to secure the area and pursue the gunmen.
- Governor AbdulRahman Abdulrazaq condemned the violence, describing it as a “cowardly attack” on civilians and promising enhanced security deployments.
- National political figures, including opposition leaders, have declared the assault a national tragedy and urged stronger leadership to protect vulnerable communities.
Security experts warn that the violence underscores deep vulnerabilities in Nigeria’s middle belt, an area previously considered less susceptible to mass militant attacks compared with the Northeast and Northwest. The brutality of the assault including reports of civilians being rounded up and executed has drawn widespread condemnation domestically and internationally.
