US Deploys Troops to Nigeria for Security Cooperation, AFRICOM Confirms

The United States has deployed a small number of troops to Nigeria as part of ongoing military cooperation between both countries, the U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM) has confirmed.

According to the commander of AFRICOM, the deployment is limited in size and scope and is focused on security cooperation, training, and advisory support for Nigerian forces. The U.S. troops are not expected to engage in direct combat operations.

U.S. officials explained that the move is aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s capacity to address pressing security challenges, including terrorism, insurgency, and broader regional instability. The command stressed that the deployment was carried out at the request of, and with the consent of, the Nigerian government.

AFRICOM added that the presence of U.S. personnel aligns with existing bilateral defence agreements between Washington and Abuja, and forms part of a long-standing military partnership.

Nigeria and the United States have maintained close defence ties over the years, particularly in areas such as intelligence sharing, counterterrorism training, and logistical and operational support.

The command noted that the deployment would be reviewed regularly and adjusted based on evolving security needs on the ground. However, further details regarding the duration of the mission or the specific locations of the deployed troops were not disclosed.
