Thousands Rally for Kwankwaso in Kano After Governor’s Party Exit
Thousands of supporters of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) leader, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, on Sunday staged a massive solidarity rally in Nasarawa Local Government Area of Kano State, days after Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf announced his exit from the party.
The supporters, many wearing the movement’s signature red caps and waving banners, converged on Kwankwaso’s residence to publicly reaffirm their loyalty to the former Kano governor and presidential candidate. The rally underscored growing political tensions within the state following the governor’s decision to part ways with the NNPP.
The show of force came in the wake of Governor Yusuf’s resignation from the NNPP on January 23, alongside 21 members of the Kano State House of Assembly, as preparations intensify for their anticipated defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Earlier on Sunday, Kano State Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Dr. Yusuf Ibrahim Kofarmata, also resigned from his position. In his resignation letter, Kofarmata cited the state government’s departure from the founding ideology and principles of the NNPP, while pledging continued loyalty to Kwankwaso and the movement he leads.
Addressing the cheering crowd, Kwankwaso thanked supporters for what he described as their “courage, consistency, and commitment” to the ideals of the NNPP. He framed the recent wave of defections as a critical test of the party’s values and resilience.
According to him, political movements built on principles often face moments of trial, adding that the NNPP remains focused on its long-term vision despite recent setbacks.
Observers say the rally signals that Kwankwaso retains significant grassroots support in Kano, even as political realignments gather momentum ahead of the 2027 general elections. The unfolding developments are expected to reshape the political landscape of Kano State and influence national calculations in the coming months.
