Nigerian Shiites Protest in Niger Over Alleged Death of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei
Members of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN), also known as Shiites, on Sunday staged a protest in Niger State over reports alleging the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
The protesters, who are followers of the IMN led in Nigeria by Ibrahim El-Zakzaky, mobilised shortly after unconfirmed reports began circulating on social media claiming that Khamenei was killed in coordinated airstrikes allegedly carried out by the United States and Israeli military.
In a video obtained on Sunday, dozens of IMN members were seen chanting solidarity slogans such as “Freedom to Iran” while marching through major streets in parts of Niger State. The demonstrators waved Iranian flags and displayed placards bearing inscriptions including “We Stand With Iran” and other protest messages.
The protest drew attention from residents as security operatives monitored the procession to ensure there was no breakdown of law and order. There was no immediate official confirmation from Iranian authorities regarding the alleged death at the time of filing this report.
The IMN, a Shiite Islamic group with a strong following in northern Nigeria, has historically expressed support for Iran’s leadership and policies. Sunday’s demonstration underscores the deep ideological ties between the group and the Iranian government.
Authorities have yet to issue an official statement regarding the protest.
