Nigeria Police Council Endorses Tunji Disu as New Inspector-General of Police, Swearing-In Set for Wednesday
The Nigeria Police Force will have a new leader after the Nigeria Police Council unanimously ratified the appointment of Olatunji Rilwan Disu as the country’s next Inspector-General of Police (IGP) on Monday. The endorsement clears the way for his formal swearing-in by President Bola Tinubu during a Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting on Wednesday, March 4, 2026.
The Council’s meeting, held at the State House in Abuja and presided over by President Tinubu, saw full attendance from key national leaders, including Vice President Kashim Shettima, state governors and the Chairman of the Police Service Commission, retired DIG Hashimu Argungu — all in line with constitutional requirements governing the appointment of the nation’s top police officer.

- Nuhu Ribadu, National Security Adviser
- Femi Gbajabiamila, Chief of Staff to the President
- Senator Ibrahim Gaidam, Minister of Police Affairs
- Nyesom Wike, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory
- Mrs. Esther Didi Walson-Jack, Head of Service
Disu’s appointment follows the resignation of former IGP Kayode Egbetokun.
Endorsements from Governors and National Leaders
Governor Babajide Sanwo‑Olu of Lagos State praised Disu’s sterling record, particularly highlighting his tenure as Commander of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) in Lagos between 2015 and 2021. Sanwo-Olu credited Disu with steering the unit to national recognition for excellence in crime control and operational efficiency.
Governor Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa State also commended President Tinubu’s choice, saying it reflected Disu’s exemplary career trajectory.
Minister of the FCT, Nyesom Wike, lauded Disu’s professionalism and leadership. Wike recalled Disu’s service in Rivers State as Assistant Commissioner in the Criminal Investigation Department and head of the anti-kidnapping unit between 2014 and 2015, before his later role as Commissioner of Police in the FCT Command.
Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State formally seconded the motion endorsing Disu’s appointment.
Career and Qualifications
Born on April 13, 1966, in Lagos State, Disu joined the Nigeria Police Force on May 18, 1992, as a Cadet Assistant Superintendent of Police. Over more than three decades of service, he has risen through the ranks and amassed a wide array of academic and professional qualifications, including:

- Forensic Investigation
- Criminology
- Security Studies
- Legal Psychology
- Entrepreneurship
These credentials underscore his commitment to knowledge-driven and contemporary policing strategies.
Before his elevation to IGP, Disu served as Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of the Special Protection Unit and the Force CID Annex in Lagos, leading critical operational, investigative and strategic commands across the country.
As he prepares to assume the role of Inspector-General of Police, stakeholders in national security, governance and civil society will be watching closely to see how his leadership shapes policing reforms and public safety in Nigeria.
