WTO Chief Okonjo-Iweala Meets Macron at UNGA 80, Hails Ocean Sustainability Pact
World Trade Organization (WTO) Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala met French President Emmanuel Macron and other global leaders at the 80th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), joining celebrations for the ratification of the High Seas Treaty.
The event marked 68 ratifications of the Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction (BBNJ) Agreement, also known as the High Seas Treaty, paving the way for its entry into force. Chilean President Gabriel Boric, civil society groups, and private sector representatives were among the participants.
Okonjo-Iweala said in a post on social media platform X that the BBNJ Agreement and the WTO Fisheries Subsidies Agreement were “highly complementary” and represented “a victory for the sustainability of our oceans.”
She thanked Macron for also celebrating the entry into force of the WTO’s Fisheries Subsidies Agreement at the gathering.
