Torrential rains on Sept. 23 and 24 left parts of Lagos’ upscale Lekki district under water, submerging luxury vehicles, disrupting businesses and forcing evacuations, officials said on Wednesday.

Floodwaters, in some areas knee-deep, followed forecasts by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) of intense rainfall across the city. Environmental experts said the flooding was worsened by Lekki’s low elevation, rapid urbanisation and blocked drainage caused by illegal construction and waste dumping.

Lagos State Environment Commissioner Tokunbo Wahab said reclamation projects had been suspended and residents in high-risk zones were urged to move to safer ground.

Critics said the annual flooding highlights persistent infrastructure and planning failures in Nigeria’s commercial capital despite repeated government pledges to address the problem.
