United States Embassy in Nigeria Warns of Possible Terror Threat to U.S. Facilities, Schools
The United States Embassy in Nigeria has issued a security advisory warning of a possible terrorist threat targeting American facilities and U.S.-affiliated schools in the country.
In the alert released late Monday, the embassy urged American citizens living in or visiting Nigeria to remain vigilant and adopt additional security precautions, particularly when travelling to diplomatic premises and institutions linked to the United States.
According to the advisory, potential targets could include the U.S. Embassy Abuja, the U.S. Consulate General Lagos, and U.S.-affiliated schools operating in the country.
“The U.S. Embassy in Abuja informs U.S. citizens of a possible terrorist threat against U.S. facilities and U.S. affiliated schools in Nigeria,” the notice stated.
The embassy advised citizens to vary their travel routes and schedules when visiting U.S. diplomatic locations or related institutions to reduce predictability.
It also recommended increasing awareness of surroundings, avoiding routine movement patterns, and reviewing personal security plans with family members.
As part of the precautionary measures, U.S. citizens were urged to remain alert in public spaces and avoid large gatherings or demonstrations that could pose additional risks.
Other safety steps listed in the advisory include keeping mobile phones charged for emergencies, maintaining a low profile, and familiarising oneself with emergency exits when entering buildings.
The embassy further encouraged American nationals to stay informed about security developments in Nigeria by consulting official travel guidance and updates from the U.S. State Department.
Despite the security alert, the embassy confirmed that consular services at its missions remain operational.
“The Consular Sections of Embassy Abuja and Consulate General Lagos remain open,” the statement said.
The advisory comes amid ongoing security concerns in parts of Nigeria where armed groups, including insurgents and bandits, continue to carry out attacks, kidnappings, and other violent crimes.
Authorities in Nigeria have not yet issued an official response to the latest advisory.
