Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria Suspends Three Doctors Over Death of Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s Son
The Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) has issued interim suspension orders against three medical practitioners following the death of Nkanu Adichie-Esege, the 21-month-old son of renowned Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie.
In a statement released by the regulatory body, the MDCN said the suspensions were imposed after it established a prima facie case of alleged medical negligence and professional misconduct.
The affected doctors are Dr. Tosin Majekodunmi, Medical Director of Euracare Multi-Specialist Hospital; Dr. Titus Ogundare, an anaesthesiologist at the same facility; and Dr. Atinuke Uwajeh, Chief Medical Director of Atlantis Paediatric Hospital.
According to the council, the interim suspension will remain in effect pending the outcome of formal proceedings before the Medical and Dental Practitioners’ Disciplinary Tribunal.
The MDCN noted that the action underscores its commitment to upholding ethical standards, ensuring professional accountability, and safeguarding patient welfare within Nigeria’s healthcare system.
While details surrounding the circumstances of the toddler’s death were not extensively disclosed, the council emphasized that due process would be followed in determining responsibility.
