The U.S. Embassy in Abuja has issued a security alert over potential protests in the Federal Capital Territory, advising citizens to remain indoors and avoid large gatherings.
The United States Embassy Abuja has issued a security alert warning of possible protests in Abuja on Wednesday, March 4, 2026, citing tensions linked to the ongoing conflict involving Iran.
In the advisory released Tuesday night, the Embassy informed U.S. citizens of a “high potential for protests” within the Federal Capital Territory and urged them to remain indoors.
According to the notice, previous demonstrations by some groups in the capital have escalated into violent clashes between protesters and Nigerian security forces.
Embassy Advises Residents to Shelter in Place
The Embassy strongly recommended that all U.S. citizens in Abuja remain in their residences throughout Wednesday as a precautionary measure.
It further advised individuals to avoid areas where protests are taking place, steer clear of crowds, and exercise caution if unexpectedly caught near large gatherings.
“Monitor local media for updates, be aware of your surroundings, and keep a low profile,” the statement read.
Other safety measures outlined include reviewing personal security plans, keeping mobile phones fully charged, carrying proper identification, and remaining alert in public spaces such as shopping centers, cinemas, and places of worship.
Residents were also encouraged to familiarize themselves with emergency exits when entering buildings and to vary travel routes and times to reduce predictability.
Consular Services Remain Open
Despite the alert, the Embassy confirmed that its Consular Section in Abuja, as well as the United States Consulate General Lagos, will remain open.
U.S. citizens were advised to monitor the Embassy’s official website for updates and to enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to receive real-time security notifications.
The advisory comes amid heightened geopolitical tensions and concerns over potential spillover demonstrations in parts of Nigeria’s capital city.
Nigerian authorities have yet to issue an official statement regarding the anticipated protests as of press time.
