Kogi State: INEC rejects petition to recall Senator Natasha
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has rejected the petition for the recall of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, who represents Kogi Central senatorial district. The petition, which was submitted by her constituents, failed to meet the constitutional requirements for recalling a senator.
According to INEC, the petition required the signatures of more than one-half of the registered voters in the constituency, which is at least 237,278 voters. However, the commission verified only 208,132 signatures and thumbprints, falling short of the constitutional requirement by 29,146 signatories.
The petition was titled “Constituents’ Petition for the Recall of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan on Grounds of Loss of Confidence.” Despite the petitioners’ claims that over 250,000 constituents signed the petition, INEC’s verification process revealed that the number was significantly lower.
As a result, INEC has issued a Public Notice stating that no further action will be taken on the recall of Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan. The notice is available on INEC’s website and social media platforms for public information.
