Havertz’s Late Strike Sends Arsenal to Carabao Cup Final After Chelsea Win
Arsenal moved a step closer to ending their long wait for major silverware after edging Chelsea to reach the Carabao Cup final on a dramatic night at the Emirates Stadium.
Holding a 3–2 advantage from the first leg, the Gunners needed a last-gasp goal to finally put the tie beyond doubt, with substitute Kai Havertz striking in the 97th minute to seal a tense aggregate victory.
The German forward, recently returned from injury, showed great composure as he rounded Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez before calmly slotting the ball into the net, sending the home crowd into celebration.
Mikel Arteta’s side, who currently sit top of the Premier League and remain active in three cup competitions, will now face either Manchester City or Newcastle United in next month’s final at Wembley Stadium.
Arsenal dominated possession in the early stages of the match but found clear chances hard to come by as Chelsea set up with a defensive back five. The first half ended goalless, with the visitors focused on containing the hosts.
Chelsea manager Liam Rosenior attempted to change the game on the hour mark, introducing attacking threats Estevao and Cole Palmer. However, Arsenal’s disciplined defence stood firm and prevented the Blues from mounting a late comeback.
That resistance proved crucial, as Havertz capitalised in stoppage time to confirm Arsenal’s place in the final. The Gunners last lifted major silverware in 2020, when they defeated Chelsea in the FA Cup final, and last appeared in a League Cup final back in 2018.
With momentum building across all competitions, Arteta’s men will now look to finish the job at Wembley and add another trophy to their cabinet.
