Arsenal Extend Premier League Lead as Chelsea, Liverpool Secure Comeback Wins
Arsenal eased fears of a late-season collapse in their Premier League title charge with a dominant 4-0 victory over Leeds United on Saturday, extending their lead at the top of the table to seven points.
The Gunners produced a ruthless performance at Elland Road to bounce back from a disappointing run that had seen them collect just two points from their previous three league matches, including a home defeat to Manchester United. The result keeps Mikel Arteta’s side firmly on course for their first Premier League title in 22 years.
Arsenal were dealt a blow before kick-off when Bukayo Saka was ruled out after suffering an injury in the warm-up. However, his replacement Noni Madueke made an immediate impact, tormenting the Leeds defence throughout the game.
Madueke’s dangerous cross was headed home by Martin Zubimendi to give Arsenal the lead, before Leeds goalkeeper Karl Darlow inadvertently turned another delivery from the winger into his own net before half-time.
Leeds’ first home defeat since November was sealed in the second half when Viktor Gyökeres finished clinically from Gabriel Martinelli’s cross, scoring his 11th goal since joining Arsenal from Sporting Lisbon. Substitute Gabriel Jesus rounded off the emphatic win with a powerful strike late on.
Despite their strong recent form, Leeds remain just six points above the relegation zone.
Chelsea Rally Past West Ham
Chelsea continued their resurgence under head coach Liam Rosenior, coming from two goals down to secure a dramatic 3-2 win over West Ham at Stamford Bridge.
The Blues endured a poor first half and were booed off at the interval after goals from Jarrod Bowen and Crysencio Summerville put the visitors firmly in control. However, Rosenior’s triple substitution at half-time transformed the match.
João Pedro and Marc Cucurella, both introduced after the break, scored to draw Chelsea level before Enzo Fernández struck the winner in stoppage time to lift the Blues into the top four.
“The reaction in the second half tells me we’ve got something really special here,” Rosenior said after the match.
Liverpool End Winless Run
Liverpool also staged a comeback, beating Newcastle United 4-1 at Anfield to secure their first league win of the year and climb into fifth place.
Newcastle took a deserved lead through Anthony Gordon, but two goals in quick succession from Hugo Ekitike including one brilliantly set up by Florian Wirtz swung the momentum in Liverpool’s favour.
After the break, Mohamed Salah assisted Wirtz for his sixth goal in 10 games, before Ibrahima Konaté scored Liverpool’s fourth in an emotional moment, breaking into tears as he marked his first appearance since the passing of his father.
Other Premier League Results
Everton rescued a 1-1 draw away at Brighton thanks to Beto’s dramatic 97th-minute equaliser, while Bournemouth eased relegation fears with a comfortable 2-0 win over bottom-placed Wolves.
