Amaechi Registers with ADC Despite Arson Attack on Party Office in Rivers State
Former Rivers State governor Rotimi Amaechi on Friday proceeded with his registration with the African Democratic Congress (ADC) despite an early morning arson attack on the party’s Ward 8 office in Ubima, Rivers State.
According to reports, unidentified gunmen set the ward office ablaze shortly before Amaechi arrived for his revalidation as a member of the party ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Witnesses said the attackers fled the scene after torching the building, leaving the facility badly damaged.
Amaechi’s convoy was also reportedly confronted by armed men who attempted to block the road leading to the venue. Security personnel attached to the former governor engaged the attackers in a brief exchange before the gunmen fled the area.
No casualties were recorded during the incident.
Despite the attack, the registration exercise continued under tight security as party members gathered at the location to complete the process.
Amaechi later inspected the burnt office and condemned the attack, describing it as an attempt to intimidate opposition figures ahead of the next election cycle.
He called on security agencies to investigate the incident and ensure that those responsible are brought to justice.
The African Democratic Congress also condemned the attack, describing it as an assault on democracy and political freedom.
Some residents in the area linked the incident to ongoing political tensions in Rivers State involving supporters of Nyesom Wike, though no official confirmation has been made regarding those behind the attack.
Ubima, Amaechi’s hometown in Ikwerre Local Government Area of Rivers State, has been a focal point of political activity in recent months as preparations gradually begin for the 2027 elections.
Political analysts say the incident highlights growing tensions within Rivers State politics, particularly between rival camps loyal to Amaechi and Wike.
Authorities have yet to issue an official statement on the attack as investigations continue.
