Peter Obi Emerges Sole NDC Presidential Aspirant for 2027 Election
Former presidential candidate Peter Obi has emerged as the sole aspirant for the 2027 presidential ticket of the Nigeria Democratic Congress following the close of nomination form sales by the party.
The party confirmed that the sale of Expression of Interest and Nomination Forms for the presidential election has officially ended, with Obi reportedly being the only politician to purchase the forms before the deadline.
Sources within the party disclosed that the former governor of Anambra State was the only aspirant to complete the process for the presidential contest, effectively positioning him as the party’s consensus flagbearer ahead of the 2027 general election.
While the presidential nomination process has closed, the NDC announced a one-week extension for the collection of nomination forms for governorship, Senate, House of Representatives and State House of Assembly positions.
According to the party, the extension applies only to aspirants contesting legislative and governorship seats across the country.
The development marks another significant step in Obi’s political realignment ahead of the 2027 elections following his recent move from the African Democratic Congress to the NDC amid ongoing opposition coalition talks.
The party’s timetable indicates that screening for aspirants who purchased and completed their forms will commence on May 19 and conclude on May 26.
Political observers believe Obi’s emergence as the lone aspirant could be part of a broader strategy by the NDC to avoid a divisive primary contest and quickly consolidate opposition support around a single candidate ahead of the next election cycle.
