VIDEO: Tiwa Savage Breaks Down in Tears During Emotional Performance in Cotonou
Nigerian music star Tiwa Savage became emotional during a live performance of her hit song, Somebody’s Son, in Cotonou, Benin Republic, on Saturday.
The award-winning singer was performing at the “We Love Ya” Festival when she was visibly moved while singing the popular track, prompting an emotional moment that has since gone viral on social media.
In a video circulating online, Tiwa Savage could be seen wiping tears from her face and pausing intermittently as she performed, while fans passionately sang along to the lyrics in a show of support and solidarity.

Somebody’s Son, which features American R&B legend Brandy, was officially released on August 20, 2021, as part of Tiwa Savage’s Water & Garri EP. The song blends Afrobeats with soulful R&B and centres on themes of love, hope, and emotional healing.
The hit track has often been described as an anthem for women patiently waiting for genuine love, with lyrics expressing faith that a “virtuous man” somebody’s son will eventually come.
In October 2021, Tiwa Savage revealed that she and Brandy wrote the song to evoke deep emotions, stating that it was meant to make women “either dance or cry.”
However, in a surprising revelation during a concert in July 2022, the singer clarified that the song was not originally written about romantic love.
“When I wrote Somebody’s Son, I was not thinking about a relationship. I was thinking about Jesus Christ, because He is the real somebody’s son,” Tiwa Savage said at the time.
Now 45, Tiwa Savage was previously married to her former manager, Tunji ‘Tee Billz’ Balogun, whom she wed in 2013 before their highly publicised divorce in 2018. The singer has not remarried since.
