AFCON Crisis: Osimhen Storms Off, Threatens to Quit Super Eagles After Lookman Bust-Up

Nigeria’s emphatic 4–0 victory over Mozambique to book a place in the AFCON quarter-finals has been overshadowed by a dramatic on-pitch bust-up involving star striker Victor Osimhen, who is now reportedly threatening to quit the Super Eagles.

The Super Eagles delivered one of their most dominant performances of the tournament on Monday night, brushing aside Mozambique with ease to keep their AFCON title hopes alive. Goals flowed freely, confidence surged, and a quarter-final clash with the Democratic Republic of Congo now beckons.

However, celebrations quickly gave way to controversy following a heated confrontation between Osimhen and teammate Ademola Lookman that stunned fans and officials alike.

Ironically, the tension came after moments of impressive chemistry between the duo. In the 25th minute, Alex Iwobi split the defence with a brilliant pass to Lookman, who unselfishly squared the ball for Osimhen to score. The pair celebrated together, sliding across the turf alongside Bruno Onyemaechi. Shortly after the break, Lookman again turned provider, setting up Osimhen for his second goal, with the Galatasary striker leaping into Lookman’s arms in celebration.

FIRS

Osimhen grew visibly frustrated as several attacking moves broke down without the ball reaching him. When Lookman opted to dribble instead of passing in a promising position, and when Onyemaechi and Akor Adams later drove into the box rather than squaring to an unmarked Osimhen, the striker threw his hands up in anger.

As Lookman walked over to take a corner kick, Osimhen confronted him aggressively, pointing in his face. Captain Wilfred Ndidi attempted to calm the situation but was brushed aside, with Osimhen slapping Ndidi’s arm away. In a bizarre twist, Mozambique defender Reinildo was the one who physically stepped in to separate the Nigerian players.

Osimhen then signalled angrily to the bench that he wanted to be substituted. He was promptly withdrawn for Moses Simon despite Nigeria cruising at 3–0.

While the rest of the squad and coaching staff gathered in a huddle on the pitch, Osimhen headed straight down the tunnel. He reportedly left the dressing room early and sat alone on the team bus while teammates remained inside handling post-match media duties. Witnesses described a notable lack of effort to console or check on the Super Eagles vice-captain.

Confirmed reports from within the Super Eagles camp claim Osimhen stormed out of the stadium, dropped his accreditation, and declared he was “done” with the national team, insisting he was returning to Turkey. Senior Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) officials are said to have rushed to intervene, with the federation’s president reportedly attempting to calm the striker, while some officials suggested he should be left alone to cool off.

Osimhen’s latest outburst has revived concerns over his temperament. In June 2024, he publicly clashed with then-head coach Finidi George on social media, but sources around the team believe this incident represents a far more serious flashpoint.

Lookman has been Nigeria’s standout performer at this AFCON, registering seven direct goal contributions three goals and four assists the highest tally at the tournament so far. Osimhen, meanwhile, remains a fan favourite and is just three goals shy of equalling Rashidi Yekini’s all-time Super Eagles scoring record, yet has cut a visibly frustrated figure throughout the competition.

For now, Nigeria’s commanding progress at AFCON has taken a back seat. The Super Eagles are soaring on the pitch, but off it, they face a potentially destabilising crisis, with their star striker reportedly threatening to walk away from the national badge.

Shaibu Urges Collaboration as NIS Produces Nigeria’s First Certified Marathon Medical Director

ABUJA, NIGERIA — The Director General and Chief Executive Officer of the National Institute for Sports (NIS), H.E. Comrade Philip Shaibu, has renewed calls for stronger collaboration among government agencies in the sports sector, emphasizing that synergy is critical to unlocking Nigeria’s full potential in sports development.

Shaibu made the call during a media interactive session alongside the Institute’s Medical Director, Dr. Sam Ogbondeminu, who recently made history as Nigeria’s first certified marathon race medical director after completing an intensive international certification programme in Spain.

Speaking at the session, Shaibu stressed that inter-agency cooperation is not just beneficial but essential, citing practical examples of how partnerships can deliver tangible results. He commended the Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Bianca Ojukwu for facilitating visa arrangements that enabled participation in the certification programme.

“This is why collaboration among government institutions is essential. Without that support, this milestone may not have been possible,” he said.

Despite this success, the NIS boss expressed concern over what he described as limited institutional support from key agencies within Nigeria’s sports ecosystem. He noted that the Institute has largely depended on internal efforts and private partnerships to sustain its programmes.

FIRS

Shaibu highlighted the need for better alignment among the country’s three major sports bodies the National Sports Commission (NSC), the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), and the NIS stressing that each plays a distinct but complementary role in national sports development.

According to him, while the NFF focuses on football and the NSC oversees general sports administration, the NIS remains the specialized institution responsible for training and certifying athletes and sports professionals across disciplines.

The NIS is not just an academic institution; it is both academic and professional. We train, certify, and build capacity for athletes and sports personnel. That role must be fully recognized and integrated into national sports planning,” Shaibu stated.

He revealed that efforts to convene formal engagements with the NSC and NFF have yet to fully materialize, despite repeated attempts. However, he expressed optimism following recent progress with the NFF, particularly in aligning NIS programmes with CAF B coaching certification standards.

“Our technical teams are already working. We want to see NIS certification align with CAF B standards, so that our graduates remain competitive globally,” he added.

Shaibu also disclosed ongoing collaboration with the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) to support financially challenged students of the Institute through a student loan initiative.

Reiterating the need for unity across government institutions, Shaibu said all agencies must function within a coordinated system, regardless of bureaucratic challenges.

“We have all been entrusted with responsibilities under the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and we must deliver,” he said.

He further underscored the strategic role of sports in national development, noting that effective collaboration could help harness sports as a tool for youth engagement, national unity, and economic diversification, while also reducing insecurity.

Highlighting the significance of Dr. Ogbondeminu’s achievement, Shaibu described it as a major breakthrough for Nigeria’s sports medicine sector, noting that the country previously relied on foreign expertise for such roles.

“This milestone marks the beginning of self-sufficiency in sports medicine for international competitions,” he said.

In his remarks, Dr. Sam Ogbondeminu recounted his journey to certification, revealing that the opportunity began when the DG encouraged him to apply as medical director for the Okpekpe International Road Race.

He explained that meeting the requirements required completing a rigorous three-stage certification programme in Madrid, Spain. Despite logistical challenges that nearly derailed the process, support from race organizers and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs ensured its successful completion.

With this development, Nigeria now has a certified marathon medical director, a milestone expected to boost the country’s capacity to host and manage international road races with improved medical standards.

The session concluded with a broader message: Nigeria’s sports sector is at a critical turning point, where collaboration, innovation, and sustained commitment will determine its future trajectory.

Porto Crowned Champions After Narrow Win Over Alverca
Share for social good

FC Porto were crowned champions of the Primeira Liga for the first time since 2022 after a hard-fought 1-0 victory over F.C. Alverca on Saturday.

The decisive moment came just before halftime when Jan Bednarek rose highest to power home a towering header from a corner in the 40th minute, sealing a crucial win that confirmed Porto’s return to the top of Portuguese football.

The result moved Porto nine points clear of closest challengers SL Benfica with two matches remaining, putting the title mathematically beyond reach.

FIRS

Earlier in the day, Benfica had stumbled to a 2-2 draw against F.C. Famalicão, a result that ultimately handed Porto the advantage. Benfica had raced into a two-goal lead, but their momentum was halted after defender Nicolás Otamendi was sent off early in the second half, allowing Famalicão to mount a comeback and secure a vital point.

Porto’s triumph marks a dream debut season for head coach Francesco Farioli, who lifts the first major trophy of his managerial career. Under his guidance, Porto have combined defensive discipline with attacking efficiency to reclaim domestic dominance.

The title is Porto’s 31st league crown, strengthening their position as one of Portugal’s most successful clubs, second only to Benfica’s tally of 38 championships.

Speaking after the match, former Porto coach José Mourinho, now in charge of Benfica, acknowledged the result despite expressing frustration with officiating.

“This game is a good reflection of what has happened in this championship. I want to give my congratulations to FC Porto for being deserving champions,” Mourinho said.

With the title secured, Porto can now focus on finishing the season strongly as they celebrate a return to the summit of Portuguese football.
