Opposition Leaders Protest INEC Bias in Abuja, Warn Against ‘One-Party State’
Prominent opposition figures, including Peter Obi, Atiku Abubakar, and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, on Tuesday led a protest in Abuja under the banner of “Save Democracy,” accusing the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of bias and political interference.
The protest follows INEC’s controversial de-recognition of certain leaders within the African Democratic Congress (ADC), including former Senate President David Mark. The decision has deepened internal party disputes and sparked concerns about judicial rulings perceived to favour rival factions.
Addressing supporters, Obi warned that Nigeria risks drifting toward a one-party state if democratic institutions are not safeguarded. He called for transparency and independence in electoral processes ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Atiku and Kwankwaso echoed similar concerns, urging Nigerians to defend democratic values and resist any attempts to undermine opposition voices.
Reacting to the protest, presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga dismissed the allegations, describing the ADC’s crisis as “self-inflicted” and rooted in internal leadership struggles rather than external interference.
Security operatives were heavily deployed across key areas of the capital to maintain order during the demonstration. Despite heightened political tensions, the protest remained peaceful, with no reported clashes.
The development underscores growing friction within Nigeria’s opposition landscape as political actors begin early positioning ahead of the 2027 elections.
