The U.S. Embassy in Abuja has announced a job opening for the position of Agricultural Specialist, inviting qualified and interested candidates to submit applications before the closing date of June 2, 2026.

According to the vacancy announcement (Announcement Number: Abuja-2026-009), the position is a full-time role under the Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS) Office of the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA).

The successful candidate will be employed at the LE-1515-10 grade level with an annual salary of $37,955 and will be based in Abuja.

Job Overview

The Agricultural Specialist will represent the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Foreign Agricultural Service in Nigeria and provide critical intelligence on agricultural commodities, trade policies, market opportunities, and other issues affecting U.S. agricultural interests.

The role also involves supporting agricultural trade development, implementing projects, resolving trade-related challenges, and maintaining professional relationships with government officials, industry stakeholders, and agricultural organizations.

According to the embassy, the successful applicant will be responsible for researching and preparing reports that provide agricultural commodity and trade policy intelligence, identifying market opportunities for U.S. agricultural stakeholders, and advising on agricultural and trade-related developments in Nigeria.

Key Responsibilities

The Agricultural Specialist will:

• Research and analyze agricultural commodity markets and trade policies.
• Prepare reports on agricultural trends, market opportunities, and policy developments.
• Advocate for U.S. agricultural interests in Nigeria.
• Implement projects and identify solutions to trade-related challenges.
• Develop and maintain professional contacts with government officials and industry stakeholders.
• Monitor agricultural and economic developments relevant to U.S.-Nigeria trade relations.

Educational Requirements

Applicants must possess:

• A Bachelor’s degree in Agricultural Economics, Food and Agricultural Marketing, Agriculture, Agribusiness, or International Trade.
• A valid NYSC Certificate or Exemption Certificate.

Experience and Skills Required

Candidates must have at least three years of professional experience in one or more of the following areas:

• Agricultural economics
• Agricultural policy
• Commodity trade
• Marketing analysis and research

The experience must include substantial analytical work and report writing.

Applicants are also expected to demonstrate:

• Excellent written and spoken English proficiency.
• Good working knowledge of French.
• Strong understanding of agricultural practices, market conditions, and government policies in Nigeria.
• Knowledge of international agricultural agreements and agricultural economic supply and demand theories.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
• Strong time-management, analytical, and communication skills.

Security Clearance and Employment Conditions

The embassy noted that all selected candidates must obtain and maintain a Public Trust background clearance.

Successful applicants may also be required to undergo a pre-employment medical examination and must be available to assume duty within six weeks of receiving the necessary clearances and approvals.
