AFCON 2025: Super Eagles Beat Uganda, Finish Group C Unbeaten
The Super Eagles of Nigeria rounded off a perfect group-stage campaign at the CAF Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025 with a convincing win over Uganda, finishing Group C unbeaten and firmly establishing themselves as one of the teams to watch in Morocco.
Uganda, on the other hand, bowed out of the tournament after failing to recover from early setbacks, ending their AFCON journey at the group stage.
Super Eagles Set the Early Tempo
From the first whistle in Fez, Nigeria showed clear intent. The Super Eagles pressed aggressively, moved the ball quickly, and stretched Uganda with width, keeping the Cranes pinned deep in their own half.
The pressure eventually paid off in the 28th minute, when Paul Onuachu reacted fastest inside the box to convert a well-worked delivery from Fisayo Dele-Bashiru. The goal crowned a dominant spell and sent Nigeria top of the group with maximum points.
Red Card Changes Everything
The turning point arrived just before the hour mark. Uganda goalkeeper Salim Magoola was shown a straight red card for handling the ball outside the penalty area to deny Victor Osimhen a clear goalscoring chance.
With the numerical advantage, Nigeria stepped up the tempo. Just four minutes later, Samuel Chukwueze slipped a precise through ball to Frank Onyeka Onyedika, who finished calmly to make it 2–0.
Onyedika Steals the Show
Onyedika was not done yet. In the 67th minute, the midfielder struck again, arriving late in the box to complete a swift counter-attack started by Onuachu and once again created by Chukwueze.
The third goal sealed a dominant performance and highlighted Nigeria’s authority in Group C — three matches, three wins, and total control.
Uganda’s Late Consolation
Despite being down to ten men, Uganda showed resilience. Allan Okello found Steven Mato, who lifted the ball over Francis Uzoho late on to pull one back.
The goal offered little more than consolation as Uganda finished the group with just one point, confirming their exit from AFCON 2025.
Nigeria now march into the knockout stages full of confidence, with momentum firmly on their side.
