Super Eagles Friendlies with Iran and Jordan in Doubt Amid Middle East Tensions
The Nigeria national football team’s scheduled international friendlies against Iran national football team and Jordan national football team are facing uncertainty following escalating tensions in parts of the Middle East.
The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) had announced that the Super Eagles would take on Iran on March 27 and Jordan on March 31 in Amman as part of a four-nation invitational tournament also featuring Costa Rica national football team. The fixtures were designed to help the team fine-tune preparations ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.
However, rising violence in the region including reported retaliatory strikes in Jordan and neighbouring countries has cast doubt over the feasibility of the matches. Security assessments are said to be ongoing, although no official cancellations have been confirmed at the time of filing this report.
The situation has sparked debate among Nigerian football fans, many of whom have taken to social media to express concern about player safety. Public commentator Daniel Regha criticised the decision to proceed with the fixtures, urging the NFF to “read the room” and prioritise safety.
Meanwhile, the Nigeria Football Supporters Club has reportedly conducted a poll among its members to gauge opinion on whether the team should travel to what some have described as a potential flashpoint zone.
The NFF is expected to provide further updates once consultations with relevant authorities and security agencies are concluded. For now, the Super Eagles’ participation in the tournament remains under review as tensions continue to unfold.
