The breakthrough came in spectacular fashion as Julián Álvarez curled in a breathtaking free-kick to give Atlético the lead. The visitors then capitalized on their advantage late in the game when Alexander Sørloth calmly tapped in a second goal, putting Diego Simeone’s side firmly in control of the tie.
Barcelona’s night took a major hit when teenage defender Pau Cubarsí was sent off following a VAR review, reducing the hosts to 10 men and shifting momentum in Atlético’s favor.
After the match, Barcelona manager Hansi Flick expressed frustration with officiating decisions, criticizing what he described as a missed “clear penalty” on Atlético’s Marc Pubill.
