FG Confirms US–Nigeria Joint Airstrikes on ISIS Targets in Sokoto
The Federal Government has confirmed that recent United States airstrikes targeting Islamic State (ISIS) elements in Sokoto State were conducted in collaboration with Nigerian security agencies.
In a statement issued on Friday, the spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kimiebi Ebienfa, said the operation was carried out under existing bilateral agreements and followed established international practice between Nigeria and the United States.
According to the ministry, the collaboration forms part of Nigeria’s broader security partnership with international allies aimed at combating terrorism and violent extremism across the country.
“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Federal Republic of Nigeria confirms that Nigerian authorities remain engaged in structured security cooperation with international partners, including the United States of America, in addressing the persistent threat of terrorism and violent extremism,” the statement said.
Ebienfa explained that the cooperation includes intelligence sharing, strategic coordination and other forms of support, all conducted in line with international law, respect for national sovereignty and shared commitments to regional and global security.
He noted that the partnership recently resulted in precision airstrikes against terrorist targets in Nigeria’s North-West region, including Sokoto State.
The ministry emphasised that Nigeria’s counter-terrorism operations are guided by the need to protect civilian lives and uphold national unity, stressing that terrorism remains unacceptable regardless of the religious or ethnic identity of its victims.
“Nigeria reiterates that all counter-terrorism efforts are guided by the primacy of protecting civilian lives, safeguarding national unity, and upholding the rights and dignity of all citizens, irrespective of faith or ethnicity,” the statement added.
It further described terrorist violence whether directed at Christians, Muslims or other communities as an affront to Nigeria’s core values and a threat to international peace and security.
The Federal Government reaffirmed its commitment to working closely with global partners to weaken terrorist networks, disrupt their funding and logistics, prevent cross-border threats and strengthen Nigeria’s own security and intelligence capabilities.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs assured that it would continue engaging relevant partners through diplomatic and security channels and keep the public informed through official communications.
