BREAKING: Defence HQ Finally Confirms Coup Plot Against President Tinubu
Nigeria’s Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has officially confirmed that a coup plot to overthrow President Bola Ahmed Tinubu was uncovered, ending months of speculation and conflicting reports surrounding the issue.
Background to the Alleged Coup Plot
In October 2025, the Federal Government abruptly cancelled the military parade scheduled for October 1, marking Nigeria’s 65th Independence Anniversary. At the time, authorities did not give a detailed explanation for the cancellation.
Days later, reports emerged suggesting that the decision was linked to an alleged coup attempt within the military. However, the Defence Headquarters swiftly dismissed the claims, insisting that the cancellation had no connection to any coup plot. The DHQ also denied reports that the arrest of certain military officers was related to any attempt to overthrow the government.
Despite these denials, BONA NAIJA reports on October 31 maintained that 16 military officers were arrested in the first week of October over an alleged coup attempt, while two others were reportedly on the run.
DHQ Confirms Findings, Officers to Be Arraigned
In a statement released on Monday, Samaila Uba, Director of Defence Information, confirmed that investigations conducted by the Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN) had established that some personnel were involved in a coup plot.
According to Uba, the investigation was carried out in line with established military procedures and has now been concluded, with findings forwarded to the appropriate authorities.
“The Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN) wishes to inform the general public that investigations into the matter have been concluded and the report forwarded to the appropriate superior authority in line with extant regulations,” the statement read.
He said the investigation carefully examined all circumstances surrounding the conduct of the affected officers and identified personnel accused of plotting to overthrow the government an act described as inconsistent with the ethics, values, and professional standards of the Nigerian military.
Uba confirmed that officers found to have cases to answer would be formally arraigned before appropriate military judicial panels in accordance with the Armed Forces Act and other applicable service regulations.
Military Emphasises Discipline and Constitutional Loyalty
The defence spokesperson stressed that the actions being taken are purely disciplinary, noting that they form part of the military’s internal mechanisms to preserve order, discipline, and operational effectiveness.
He added that the Armed Forces remain committed to maintaining the highest standards of professionalism, loyalty, and respect for constitutional authority, reassuring Nigerians of the military’s dedication to democratic governance.
