Raw, popularly known as Adventure Jones, has ignited controversy after releasing footage from Nigeria’s controversial deradicalisation programme for former Boko Haram fighters in Borno State.
In the video, Raw documents activities inside camps run under Operation Safe Corridor, a Federal Government initiative launched in 2016 to rehabilitate and reintegrate repentant insurgents into society.
The footage shows former fighters undergoing military-style drills, dressed in camouflage, and handling weapons during training exercises. Some of the individuals reportedly admitted to past involvement in violent attacks, raising concerns over their readiness for reintegration and the sincerity of their repentance.
Programme Under Scrutiny
Operation Safe Corridor was established as a non-kinetic strategy to address insurgency in Nigeria’s North-East by encouraging defections from Boko Haram.
According to official figures, over 83,000 individuals have surrendered and passed through various stages of the programme, including psychological evaluation, vocational training, and civic reorientation.
Authorities maintain that the initiative is critical to weakening insurgent ranks and promoting long-term peace in the region.
However, Raw’s footage has intensified public skepticism. Critics argue that the programme may be too lenient, especially as some rehabilitated individuals have allegedly returned to insurgent groups or engaged in further violence after reintegration.
