Germany Reportedly Rejects Fani-Kayode as Nigeria Secures Agréments from 10 Countries for Ambassadorial Appointments

The Federal Government has announced progress in securing diplomatic approvals, known as agréments, for Nigeria’s ambassador-designates, even as Germany reportedly rejected the nomination of former minister Femi Fani-Kayode.

In a statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Nigeria disclosed that several countries have already granted acceptance for Nigeria’s nominees.

Countries Grant Approval

According to the ministry, agréments have been secured from the United Kingdom, France, United States, Ireland, Qatar, Benin Republic, Ethiopia, Djibouti, Senegal, and Sierra Leone.

The ministry’s spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa, stated that responses from other countries are still being awaited. He added that the date for the induction ceremony of the envoys will be announced once finalised and approved by the Presidency.

Germany Rejects Fani-Kayode’s Nomination

Meanwhile, the Germany has reportedly declined the nomination of Fani-Kayode as Nigeria’s ambassador.

According to Peoples Gazett, the German government cited concerns over his “erratic behaviour” and past controversial remarks, including statements described as ethnocentric, tribalistic, and religiously divisive.

The development follows his recent altercation with the United Kingdom’s High Commissioner to Nigeria, Richard Montgomery, during a Ramadan dinner in Abuja.

Possible Redeployment

Sources within the administration suggest that Fani-Kayode may be redeployed to another country, with South Africa being considered as a possible alternative posting.

Fani-Kayode, a former aviation minister, has long been a controversial figure in Nigerian politics, known for outspoken views and past public disputes, including a widely criticised confrontation with a journalist in 2020.

Background and Legal History

The former minister has also faced legal challenges in the past. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission had filed multiple charges against him, including allegations of fraud, money laundering, and forgery.

However, between 2024 and 2025, courts dismissed the cases, citing the prosecution’s failure to sufficiently link him to the alleged offences.
