Ini Edo Apologises to CAN Over Controversial Film Title ‘A Very Dirty Christmas’
Nollywood actress and filmmaker Ini Edo has tendered a public apology to the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) following widespread backlash over the title of her new movie, A Very Dirty Christmas.
The apology came during an emotional Instagram Live session where the actress addressed concerns raised by Christian groups and members of the public. Ini Edo explained that the title was a product of creative expression and was never intended to demean or ridicule the Christian faith or the Christmas season.
“I am deeply sorry. If I had known that the title ‘A Very Dirty Christmas’ would cause this level of pain, I would have changed it immediately,” she said. “I am a Christian, and my entire team are Christians. We prayed before this project and reverenced God throughout. I never meant to insult or disgrace Christians in any way.”
The family drama, which was released in cinemas on December 16, attracted criticism from CAN, which described the title as “offensive” and a “mockery” of the Christian faith. The association argued that linking Christmas—a sacred Christian celebration—with the word “dirty” undermines its spiritual significance.
In a statement, CAN called on the producers and promoters of the film to reconsider the title and issue a public apology to Christians nationwide.
The Christian body also questioned how the movie received approval from the National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB), Nigeria’s regulatory authority for film content.
Responding to the concerns, the Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer of the NFVCB, Dr Shaibu Husseini, confirmed that the film was submitted, reviewed, approved, and classified by the board as a work of fictional and creative expression.
He noted, however, that the board recognises the importance of public perception and religious sensitivity, adding that the NFVCB has since reached out to the film’s producers to consider a possible title modification.
According to Dr Husseini, the board remains committed to upholding religious sensitivity, mutual respect, and peaceful coexistence in carrying out its statutory responsibilities.
