AFCON MATCH DAY 2: Salah’s Stoppage-Time Strike Seals Egypt’s 2-1 Comeback Win Over Zimbabwe
Egypt opened their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations campaign with a dramatic 2-1 victory over Zimbabwe in Agadir, Morocco, on Monday, thanks to a last-gasp winner from captain Mohamed Salah.
Zimbabwe stunned the seven-time champions by taking the lead in the 20th minute when Prince Dube finished clinically against the run of play. Despite dominating possession and piling on pressure, Egypt struggled to break down a resilient Zimbabwean defence for much of the contest.
The breakthrough finally arrived in the 64th minute as Omar Marmoush drew Egypt level, converting after sustained pressure in the Zimbabwe penalty area. The Pharaohs continued to push forward, peppering the opposition goal with wave after wave of attacks.
Their persistence paid off deep into stoppage time when Mostafa Mohamed set up Salah, who calmly fired home in the 90+1st minute to complete the comeback and send the Egyptian fans into celebration.
Egypt finished the match with a commanding 77 percent possession and registered 35 shots, underlining their control despite the late drama. The victory places them top of Group B ahead of their next fixture against Cape Verde on December 26.
The result gives Egypt a strong start as they chase an eighth AFCON title, while Zimbabwe will be left to rue missed chances after coming so close to a famous upset.

🔹 South Africa 2–1 Angola
South Africa claimed a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Angola in their Group B opener in Marrakech. Lyle Foster scored the decisive goal in the 79th minute after Oswin Appollis had given South Africa an early lead and Angola levelled before halftime.
🔹 Mali 1–1 Zambia
In Group A, Mali and Zambia played out a 1-1 draw in Casablanca. Mali went ahead through Lassine Sinayoko’s 61st-minute strike, but Zambia’s Patson Daka rescued a point with a stoppage-time diving header in the 92nd minute.
