Aisha Yesufu: I’ll Oppose Peter Obi If He Breaks One-Term Promise
Nigerian activist Aisha Yesufu has declared she would withdraw her support and actively oppose Peter Obi if he decides to seek a second term as Nigeria’s president, citing what she described as a firm prior commitment to serve only one term.
Speaking during an interview on ARISE News on April 6, 2026, Yesufu said her position is rooted in principles of accountability and integrity. According to her, Obi had repeatedly assured supporters both before and after the 2023 general elections that he would serve a single term if elected.
“Yes, I would oppose him,” she stated, emphasizing that leadership should be about delivering impact within a defined period rather than extending tenure.
Yesufu argued that four years is sufficient for a focused and capable leader to establish a lasting legacy, drawing parallels with global figures such as Nelson Mandela and Lee Kuan Yew, who she said demonstrated transformational leadership without relying on prolonged time in office.
Her remarks come amid growing political conversations ahead of the 2027 general elections, where Obi’s potential candidacy remains a subject of speculation. The former Anambra State governor has, on multiple occasions, reaffirmed his support for a single-term framework, describing the promise as “sacrosanct.”
As recently as August 2025, Obi reiterated his position, advocating for a constitutional amendment to establish a single five-year presidential term in Nigeria. Political observers believe this stance is part of a broader strategy to build trust and broaden his appeal, particularly among voters in northern Nigeria.
However, Yesufu’s comments introduce a new layer to the debate, signaling that even within Obi’s support base, expectations around the one-term pledge remain strong and could shape political alignments heading into the next election cycle.
