2027: Peter Obi hints at possible defection to another party
Former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, has suggested he may switch political parties again ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections, saying he is willing to move across multiple platforms if it would help achieve meaningful change in the country.
Obi made the remarks on Monday during an interview on Prime Time, a programme aired on Arise Television and monitored by BONA NAIJA.
Speaking on his political future, the former Anambra State governor stressed that his commitment lies in delivering results for Nigerians rather than remaining loyal to any single political structure.
“I don’t have much time in politics. If I have to move to 20 different political parties, I will do it,” Obi said.
“I cannot be talking about change and something new while still using the same process of yesterday to build the future.”
The statement comes amid growing political realignments ahead of the 2027 elections, with several opposition figures exploring new alliances.
Obi, who contested the 2023 presidential election under the Labour Party, had earlier defected to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) on December 31, 2025.
Reaffirming his stance on electoral integrity, Obi maintained that he has never been involved in malpractice at any stage of the electoral process.
“I have never been involved in any form of election rigging at primary level, the election itself and after that,” he said.
“I have never been part of paying people at the judiciary or anywhere to give me judgment I never deserved.”
His comments are expected to fuel further debate within Nigeria’s political landscape, especially among supporters and stakeholders assessing potential coalitions ahead of 2027.
