Court Remands Human Rights Lawyer, Dele Farotimi, Over Alleged Defamation of Afe Babalola

A Magistrate court in Ado Ekiti, Ekiti State, has remanded human rights lawyer and activist, Dele Farotimi, in a correctional center. Farotimi was arraigned by the police for allegedly defaming the character of renowned legal luminary Chief Afe Babalola in his book, “Nigeria and its Criminal Justice System”.

The 16-count charge against Farotimi alleges that he criminally defamed Afe Babalola, exposing him to hatred, contempt, ridicule, and damage to his hard-earned career. Farotimi pleaded not guilty to all charges.

The police prosecutor, Samson Osun, requested that Farotimi be remanded in the correctional center pending further investigation. However, Farotimi’s counsel, Dayo Akeredolu, opposed the remand call, arguing that the case is bailable and Farotimi is a known figure who poses no threat.

Despite the opposition, Magistrate Abayomi Adeosun refused Farotimi’s bail application and remanded him in prison custody. The matter has been adjourned until December 10 for continuation of the hearing.
